Intent
It is our intent at Clanfield Junior School to provide all of our children with a high quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), which develops their love of learning about other languages and cultures as well as an understanding of the richness and diversity between cultures. Our aim is to develop the confidence and competence of each child, whilst encouraging them to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education.
Implementation
At Clanfield Junior School the French KS2 curriculum is implemented through engaging and interactive lessons that incorporate a variety of teaching methods and resources. This is based mainly around the scheme on CGP+ but we support this using other activities.
Our children have weekly lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2 that develop the following skills:
- Speaking and Listening: Pupils participate in oral activities such as dialogues, songs, and role-playing to practice pronunciation, intonation, and conversational skills.
- Reading and Writing: Basic reading skills are developed through simple texts, stories, and poems, while writing skills are nurtured through exercises like labelling, sentence construction, and short paragraphs.
- Cultural Exposure: Lessons include cultural elements such as French traditions, holidays, and everyday life, often integrated through multimedia resources, storytelling, and cultural projects.
- Games and Activities: Learning is reinforced with educational games, flashcards, and interactive activities that make language acquisition fun and memorable.
These all enable our teaching of French to cover all the aspects of the MFL national curriculum: speaking, listening, reading, writing and cultural understanding.
Impact
The teaching of French at Clanfield Junior School demonstrates progression through years 3 to 6 while being fun and enjoyable for our learners.
By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils will have learned French through a variety of topics which enable them to express their opinions and demonstrate understanding of sentence structures in spoken and written language. This forms a base for their further learning of languages in Key Stage 3.
Overall, our French KS2 curriculum aims to create confident and enthusiastic young learners who are well-prepared for further language education and who appreciate the value of linguistic and cultural diversity.
