Swimming Proficiency

Swimming at Clanfield Junior School

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2, as part of the National Curriculum for Physical Education (PE).

At Clanfield Junior School, we deliver our swimming lessons in the Summer Term of Year 5 using the fantastic Swim:ED pop-up pool provided by ActiveMe 360.

Children in the pop up pool

This innovative programme allows us to provide high-quality swimming and water safety lessons right here on the school site, using a portable heated pool with on-site changing rooms. Children learn in small, focused groups, receive more swimming hours, and build confidence in a familiar, supportive environment.

The Swim:ED programme also has a strong focus on water safety, linking directly to our school’s vision of keeping every child safe in and around water. Learning to swim is a vital life skill — one that gives children confidence, promotes wellbeing, and opens up opportunities for outdoor learning, school trips, and water-based activities.

While our Year 5 pupils take part in the core curriculum swimming lessons, all other year groups also have the opportunity to experience the pop-up pool, taking part in water safety sessions and confidence-building activities. This ensures that every child at Clanfield has the chance to enjoy the pool, learn key safety messages, and develop a positive attitude towards swimming.

Our children thoroughly enjoyed the experience, describing it as a highlight of their year. We are so pleased with the impact this has had on their swimming confidence and attitudes towards water safety that we are raising funds to bring the pool back next year.
