Teaching and learning
Our curriculum aims ensures that our teaching and learning supports every single child during their educational journey here at CJS:
•For all children and adults to live and breathe our school values
•For all children and adults to be the best that they can be
•To maximise learning time for everyone
•To make sure everyone gets precisely what they need to be successful learners
•For all children to be ready for secondary school
How we teach at CJS:
We believe in building our teaching around checking for understanding, teaching explicit knowledge, effective feedback and clear modelling. Our teachers work within this teaching model to craft learning journeys and lessons:
How we give feedback about the learning:
We have embarked on a new approach to how we give feedback to children, and it has empowered our pupils to develop more resilience and independence. Feedback is the information we give to help children understand misconceptions, how to secure or deepen their learning, and how to be the best they can possibly be. It is a two way process and tells our staff what each child needs to move their learning forward. Feedback is specific, linked to the learning and helpful. It can be written or verbal.
Staff have been using 3 types of strategies to promote rich dialogue, stimulate curiosity and develop independence-
Prompt- a little nudge in the right direction.
Clue- a specific piece of information to help you.
Model- drawing or showing you how to do it.
Our children have also been learning about feedback, and were taught in assembly about the inspirational story of Austin's butterfly. They were fascinated by the incredible progress made in all of his drawings, due to the specific and helpful feedback Austin received:
If you spot a butterfly in your child's book, it means Mrs Dawkins has noticed how well they have responded to teacher feedback and further improved their learning!
Our ultimate aim is for our children to develop a range of key strategies to increase their independence, which they can transfer to secondary school, college and university.
