Safeguarding

 Keeping Everyone Safe in School

At Clanfield Junior School, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Every adult who works or volunteers here plays an important part in ensuring that our children feel safe, supported and cared for every day. It is our highest priority, and we make sure it is at the heart of every aspect of school life, from the curriculum and policies to the daily care and support we provide.

Safeguarding includes:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment
  • Preventing impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development
  • Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes
  • (Taken from Working Together to Safeguard Children – the national guidance)

All staff, governors and regular volunteers hold up-to-date DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks and receive regular safeguarding and child protection training. This helps everyone to recognise concerns quickly and take the right action to keep children safe.

To make it clear who’s who, all adults on site wear coloured lanyards:

  • 🟣 Purple lanyards – School staff

  • 🟡 Yellow lanyards – Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs)

  • Black lanyards – Governors

  • 🔴 Red lanyards – Visitors without a DBS (must always be accompanied by a member of staff)

All visitors sign in electronically at the school office on arrival and are issued with the correct lanyard. Safeguarding posters around school show photographs of our DSL team so that children and visitors always know who to speak to if they are worried or need support.

Our staff receive regular training to support us in being professionally curious, and work closely with families and external agencies to ensure every child’s safety and wellbeing remains central to all we do.

Safeguarding Team

At Clanfield Junior School, we have a dedicated safeguarding team who work together to ensure that all our children are safe, cared for, and supported at all times.

If you have a safeguarding concern, please contact one of our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) via the school office or by email: adminoffice@clanfield.hants.sch.uk, marking your message For the Attention Of the DSL.

During school hours: 02392 593209
Out of school hours: If you have an urgent concern about a child’s safety, please contact Hampshire Children’s Services on 0300 555 1384 (or 0300 555 1373 out of hours).

  • Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mrs Kati Dawkins – Headteacher

  • Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead: Mrs Katie Pinhorne – Deputy Headteacher and Inclusion Leader (SENDCo)

  • Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead: Mrs Caroline Moakes – ELSA

  • Safeguarding Governor: Mrs Christin Willet

Safeguarding procedures continue beyond the school day. During Breakfast Club and After School Club, our extended DSL team ensures that the same high standards of safety and care are maintained, and any concerns are reported directly to the main DSLs. Our additional Deputy DSLs, based in the office, Breakfast Club and After school club, ensure that safeguarding support is always available across the whole school day, including wraparound care. They report directly to the main DSL team and work closely with them to ensure consistency and swift communication in all safeguarding matters.

Our extended Safeguarding Curriculum

At Clanfield Junior School, safeguarding is not just about keeping children safe — it’s about empowering them with knowledge, confidence, and the right strategies to make safe and responsible choices throughout their lives.

We follow the National Curriculum expectations for safeguarding, covering areas such as online safety, relationships education, physical health, and emotional wellbeing.

However, our provision goes far beyond the National Curriculum. We have created a bespoke safeguarding curriculum, carefully designed for our children and community. It reflects real-life situations and local contexts to make learning meaningful and relevant. Please see our full map for more details: CJS safeguarding curriculum
