Art

Intent

At Clanfield Junior School, we believe that Art lessons should incorporate the following three elements; skills, knowledge and exposure. Allowing the children to have regular opportunities to develop their creativity and understanding of the subject.

Our Art curriculum provides children with regular opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Throughout the year, and their time at Clanfield, children will learn the seven key skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, sculpture and digital art.  Knowledge of the subject will then be developed in two stages: the first will be the teaching of artists, developing an informed curiosity about the skills and techniques they have used within their work, linked to the current theme; the second stage will be opportunities to apply the skills they have learnt within Art in other subject areas. Children will have regular exposure to art, encouraging a respectful curiousity to openly ask questions and develop an understanding of the culture.

In Art, children will show development throughout their time at Clanfield Junior School, by creating a sketch book they can refer to, to identify their progress and give them confidence to tackle more demanding work.

Implementation

Each term children have the chance to develop their drawing and painting art skills, and each year the pupils will have the opportunity to develop skills within sculpture, collage, textiles and printing. Progression is clear from the objectives each year group will cover and the expected outcome of projects. Teachers are able to identify this progression using the long and medium term plans. Children should also know how art and design reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of the world, this will be woven into the teaching of art and design each term.

Impact

Art and design learning is loved by teachers and pupils across Clanfield Junior School. Teachers have higher expectations and more quality evidence can be presented in a variety of ways. All children use technical vocabulary accurately and pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes taught. Children improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and their impact through art and design on the world. Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art. Children show ability to improve their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. All children in school can speak confidently about their art and design work and their skills.
