PSHE

PSHE Workshop for Children

At Clanfield Junior School, PSHE plays a vital role in helping our children grow into kind, respectful, curious, and resilient individuals — ready to make a positive difference in the world.

Through our lessons, assemblies, conversations, charity events, special occasions, and volunteering roles, children learn about who they are, how to look after themselves and others, and what makes a healthy, positive relationship. They explore how to show empathy, respect, and responsibility — all key parts of becoming caring and confident members of our community.

Guided by our school and British values, we aim to help every child develop the confidence, compassion, and sense of responsibility they need to thrive — as learners and as wonderful humans in the wider world.

We teach PSHE using the SCARF programme, to help our children grow into safe, caring, and confident individuals. SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship — values that are woven through everything we do at school. SCARF provides a clear, whole-school approach to PSHE from Year 3 to Year 6. It’s based on a ‘Growth Mindset’ approach, encouraging children to believe in themselves, learn from challenges, and always keep trying their best.

The programme is split into six engaging themes that build each year as children move through the school:

  • 🌟 Me and My Relationships – learning about friendships, teamwork and communication

  • 🛡️ Keeping Myself Safe – understanding how to make safe choices in different situations

  • 🌈 Valuing Difference – celebrating diversity and respecting others

  • 🌱 Growing and Changing – learning about physical and emotional changes

  • 💪 Being My Best – setting goals, staying healthy and building resilience

  • 🤝 Rights and Responsibilities – understanding our role in school and the wider world

Assemblies

As well as using the SCARF scheme, we weave personal, social and emotional learning through all aspects of school life. Our assemblies — both whole-school and class-based — provide opportunities to reflect on important themes such as kindness, respect, diversity, e-safety, anti-bullying, and wellbeing. These shared moments encourage children to think deeply about their actions and the impact they have on others.

Each week, children also take part in class reflections, where they can talk openly about topics such as friendship, feelings, teamwork, and problem-solving. These sessions help children to develop empathy, emotional awareness, and the confidence to express themselves respectfully.

My Happy Mind

At Clanfield Junior School, we are proud to also use My Happy Mind across all year groups. This exciting programme helps children to understand how their brains work and supports them in developing positive habits, confidence, and resilience — helping every child to be their very best self!

My Happy Mind is delivered by class teachers through a series of engaging and interactive lessons. Children then have the opportunity to apply their new learning throughout the day — whether that’s practising gratitude, showing kindness, or using calming strategies when things feel tricky.

To strengthen the link between school and home, My Happy Mind has also created a Parent App, which helps families understand what their children are learning. The app includes:

  • Short explanations and resources to support conversations at home

  • Fun activities and games to enjoy together

  • A Kids Zone full of My Happy Mind-inspired challenges and ideas
